From BCHD Website:

Launched by Beach Cities Health District in 2005, LiveWell Kids is a comprehensive obesity prevention program developed specifically for elementary school students (K-5). The program was originally created in response to an alarmingly high rate of obesity at the time – 20 percent in 2005 – among Redondo Beach elementary school students. Today, thanks to a steady diet of LiveWell Kids programming in every Redondo Beach elementary school, the obesity rate has fallen to just 7.2 percent – while state and national numbers continue to rise.

The LiveWell Kids curriculum is delivered in the classroom or school garden by trained Parent Docents. The program blends nutrition lessons and regular physical activity with mindfulness practices and garden education to help students adopt healthy lifestyle behaviors and habits at an early age.

The Walking School Bus program rolled into elementary schools in the Beach Cities in 2010 and has since spread to include 14 schools, 37 mile-long “bus routes” to school and hundreds of participating students. Each year, Walking School Bus participants log thousands of miles, save unnecessary car trips and burn excess calories – while also gaining valuable social connection and interaction with their peers.
